Together with Wietske Werkyl and Gerda Sprenger, we went to see the Turkish
Deniz family.
Something out of the ordinary: Risa Deniz, head of the family,
is the Imam of a Turkish parish.
He is very open to dialogue. Mr. Deniz is an active member of intercultural circles and can be found
at according events.
Theologically, Risa stands for the Eastern-Turkish theologian and politician
Said Nursi (1876 -
1960).
In the spirit of enlightenment, the latter spoke out for
freedom of sciences
and religion.
This orientation towards dialogue and the spirit of reformation is,
unfortunately, rather exceptional than generally accepted.
When it came to the discussion on murders of honour within the Turkish-Islamic
community in Germany,
Risa made clear that it is "not a matter of Islam, but a matter of culture".
However, the women of the
family veiled their heads as protection against men who were no family members.
